PREA Summit 2006 - Releasing the Shackles of Victimization & Paving the Road to Healing SummitSkamania Lodge - Stevenson, WA | September 25 - 26, 2006We would like to invite you to WCSAP's Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) " Releasing the Shackles of Victimization & Paving the Road to Healing Summit on September 25 th 26 th , 2006 at the Skamania Lodge in Stevenson , WA . WCSAP has been working with Department of Corrections (DOC), Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration (JRA) and other correction agencies around the states in dealing with this important issue. Part of WCSAP's responsibility is to provide training to victim services on this issue. PREA has brought to light a lot of issues surrounding prison rape that has been kept in the dark for years. One main issue, among many, is that many victims do not have access to victim services inside or outside of prison. They were not aware of the services that were available to them. This issue s is not just a prison issue, but a society issue as a whole. As victim service providers, we understand that a victim is a victim, no matter who he or she is. It does not matter what crime they have committed, or where they may have come from. Historically, nationally and globally, our concerns are for the victims and we know rape in prison has been going on for many years. We know there are many survivors outside of prison who may have never come forward, or had never received any kind of assistance. PREA has opened up the gates, the access road to healing for victims. It's our time, in the service of advocacy, to let victims know that we not only care, but we understand the struggle that they may have endured while incarcerated. This " Releasing the Shackles of Victimization & Paving the Road to Healing Summit " will provide opportunity for your questions to be addressed in regards to the subject of prison rape. The Summit will also present opportunities for you to speak with individuals who are not only experts in this area, but have been addressing this issue for many years. They have been part of the reason why PREA is where it is today. They have a wealth of knowledge of why it is important for us to do this work, and they are there to assist us in understanding why this issue has been going on for so long. You will be given the tool and information to prepare you and your agency to more efficiently help and provide services to victims of prison rape. It's hard for those working outside of prisons to understand prison life, and how prisons are operated. This Summit will help you understand more than you would have ever imagined. Please don't miss this important Summit . Prison rape does not only affect the life in prison, but it also affects the life of our community. Ninety-seven percent of all inmates will return back to our community. Prison rape is not just DOC's/JRA's issue; it's our issue as participants in the movement to eradicate sexual violence. Inmates are human being; they are someone's sister, son, daughter, cousin, father, or mother. We are in the business of caring, and they should not be excluded! We look forward to seeing each and every one of you at the Summit ! Please call in regards to information on Registration. Limited diversity scholarships are available.
