Black women’s sexual victimization has occurred in a unique sociohistorical context. Accordingly, I will (1) Provide a historical overview of sexual assault and how it shapes the contemporary experiences of Black women; (2) Discuss the characteristics of Black rape survivors and the environments in which the assaults occur; (3) Identify risk factors that make Black women vulnerable to sexual assault; (4) Review physical and health consequences of rape; (5) Offer culturally sensitive treatment strategies; and (6) Share resources on this topic. 


Dr. Carolyn West

Dr. Carolyn West is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Washington where she teaches courses on Sexual Violence and Sex Crimes. With more than two decades of teaching experience, she writes, trains, consults, and lectures internationally on intimate partner violence and sexual assault, with a special focus on African American Women. Dr. West is author of more than 50 publications and is editor of the book Violence in the Lives of Black Women and the journal Sexualization, Media, and Society. She has delivered keynote addresses, conducted workshops, and delivered papers at more than 100 conferences.

WCSAP is unable to cover the cost of participant travel or accommodations.


WCSAP will not provide any food or beverages for this training.

Training Hours and Credits: 

This training will count as 6 hours ongoing sexual assault training for OCVA sexual assault grantees.


WCSAP makes every effort to ensure accessibility for participants that request them. Please register about 3 weeks before the event to allow time for scheduling interpreters.

Cost for Members: 

There is no registration fee for WCSAP Program, Organizational and Individual Members or OCVA Sexual Assault Contractors.

Cost for Non-Members:
