Adults as Allies

This informative workbook from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s website is for adults who are, or who want to become, allies of young people creating community change. The assumption is that adults can benefit from information and intended to increase inter-generational interaction and mutual support in the common cause of creating change. Highlights in this workbook include: “What are the benefits of youth participation?” “Identifying potential youth leaders,” “The role of adults in developing youth leaders,” “Assessing adults as allies,” and “Setting guidelines for intergenerational groups.”

The Community Toolbox

This site provides practical guidance for improving community health and development through thousands of downloadable pages of specific skill building information. Some features include: the Community Work Station, which provides a place where you can work on core activities such as developing a strategic plan, creating a leadership plan, or developing a grant application; Working Together for Healthier Communities outlines a new social contract or memorandum of agreement for how community initiatives, grant makers and those who would support them can work together more effectively to make a difference; Framework for Program Evaluation provides a guide for evaluating specific programs that relate to community goals and the Community Trouble Shooting Guide promotes guiding questions and links to tools to address problems you might be experiencing in doing the work of promoting community health and development.

The Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network

GLSEN strives to assure that each member of every school community is values and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. We believe that such an atmosphere engenders a positive sense of self, which is the basis of educational achievement and personal growth. Since homophobia and heterosexism undermine a healthy school climate, we work to educate teachers, students and the public at large about the damaging effects these forces have on youth and adults alike. We recognize that forces such as racism and sexism have similarly adverse impacts on communities and we support schools in seeking to redress all such inequities. GLSEN seeks to develop school climates where difference is values for the positive contribution it makes in creating a more vibrant and diverse community. We welcome as members any and all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity/expression or occupation, who are committed to seeing this philosophy realized in K-12 schools. Features on the website include: articles, resources, staff training & development, statistics, bookstore and contact information for local chapters.
