URGENT! ACTION NEEDED! News from the Hill: SA Cuts Proposed

Dear Friends,

Today the Governor released a budget alternatives proposal and it isn't good news for crime victims programs in Washington State.

The document contains two proposed alternatives.  The first alternative proposed puts forward the elimination of sexual assault formula grants, which total $9.5 million.

This information can be located on page 19 of the proposal. The first alternative "Terminates state funds for grants to the 39 community programs that deliver prevention and  treatment services to victims of sexual assault.  Annually, more than 85,000 individuals are served.  Programs take in about 10,000 new clients, 57 percent of whom are children. "

The second alternative, instead of eliminating sexual assault funding completely, suggests making a grant reduction of 20% totaling a $3 million savings.

We can't stress enough how vital your response is!  Please contact the Governor's office and your legislators immediately. Tell them to reject the proposals.  Tell them that this money funds essential services for adults and children in Washington State who have been victimized.  Additionally, programs offer quality prevention and support enhanced community safety. Stress the vital nature of your services.

Please talk about the work your programs does and the critical nature of the services you offer.  Victims need access to resources, support, and healing!

Now is the time to raise your voice and rally your supporters to get active and make calls too.  Legislative contacts must get made!  Please let me know who you contacted and any response received.

Don't know who your legislator is, or need their contact information?   Click here.

What is next?

This is the Governor's proposal and there will be a special session starting November 28th to address the state budget.  It is very important to raise your voice now and continue to participate in the legislative process.  Engage your community, your boards, and your stakeholders!

WCSAP will continue to send you updates and action requests. We are lobbying diligently and working to minimize reductions and need your participation!

As the sexual assault movement, we need to stand strong and united, and be very engaged at this critical time.

In Solidarity,

Andrea Piper-Wentland
Executive Director
