Wage and Salaries and Benefits…Oh My! VOCA Impacts

How do you implement the new VOCA funding dollars strategically and sustainably?

Having a new sustainable funding source isn’t a common situation for most non-profits to be in, so you may be asking yourself, what now? Below are a few suggestions, resources, and strategies to consider.

First of all, it is important to do some evaluation of your community:

  • Understand the economic climate of the region you provide services in.

Second, there are several approaches to designing a wage or salary scale:

  • Conduct a job analysis of each position
  • Create and/or review and revise job descriptions
  • Review pay structures

Third, create or maintain incentives for staff retention:

  • Cost of living allowance (COLA)
  • Longevity pay
  • Merit increases
  • Bonuses

Finally, communicate often and be transparent with staff:

  • When staff feel informed about the compensation plan they feel reassured that they are being paid fairly.
  • This creates greater motivation and improves retention.
