Description

Working with young people who have been sexually assaulted can often be a daunting task for advocates and volunteers. Often, sexual assault advocates are tasked with "specializing" in so many areas of victimization, that it becomes overwhelming. How can one use the expertise that they already have to their benefit when working with young people? What barriers stand in the way of serving youth in a relevant and empowering way? In this webinar, participants will get an overview of what makes an organization youth "friendly", and youth competent. We will discuss how to prepare staff and volunteers to work with youth in-person and on the help line; how to make intakes culturally competent for youth; and how to screen new staff and volunteers to ensure that they are the best fit for serving all age groups. Throughout this training, we will break down common barriers and address any fears that you might have around working with these survivors.

Learning Objectives
  • Be able to identify what strengths you/your agency already have that can be used to better serve youth.
  • Learn how to screen volunteers and staff to ensure an empowering experience for youth that seek services with your agency.
  • Identify personal barriers to serving youth effectively and specific methods to overcome those barriers.
