Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Services of Whatcom County

Claudia Ackerman has worked as the Group Coordinator at Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services of Whatcom County since August of 2000 after receiving a bachelor’s degree in Human Services from Western Washington University. For over 21 years Claudia has facilitated adolescent sexual assault support groups for girls in the Whatcom County middle and high schools and Sea Mar Visions Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center. Claudia has led similar groups at Whatcom County’s Juvenile Detention Center and Juvenile Justice Center. She has also facilitated women’s trauma support groups at the Whatcom County jail, and currently leads adult male and female sexual assault groups, as well as domestic violence support groups for female survivors. For several years Claudia taught Victim Empathy classes to Sex Offenders as part of their treatment program and as another means of carrying out the mission of DVSAS. Claudia has conducted webinars on support group facilitation and has led workshops on journaling as a coping mechanism both at annual WCSAP conferences and California’s state sexual assault conference. Claudia adores her 8 grandchildren and 2 sons, resides in Bellingham with her husband Rick, and enjoys walking, kayaking, playing the piano, and spending time in her yard. She plans to just keep on doing the work 'til there’s no more to do!
